Results:

The last five measured values of the test item solution were used to calculate the mean value of the surface tension. In the table below these measured data together with the corresponding test time and the mean value are summarized. All measured values were automatically corrected according to Harkins-Jordan by the application software. The mean value was finally rounded to two decimals by the software.

Executive summary:

The surface tension of an aqueous solution of Maleic acid mono (2-ethylhexyl) ester was determined according to EU method A.5. and OECD Guideline 115 by the ring method. The solubility of the test item in distilled water is between 1 mg/L and 1 g/L (determined by visual pre-tests). Therefore an aqueous solution of the test item with 90 % of the saturation concentration was prepared and analysed for surface tension. After filling the solution into the vessel of the tensiometer and tempering it to the test temperature, the measuring procedure was started and repeated until the value of surface tension remained nearly constant. The surface tension of the test solution was calculated from the arithmetic mean of the last five measured values. Each measuring value is considering the correction according to Harkins-Jordan. The final result multiplied with the calibration factor of the tensiometer is finally rounded to one decimal place. For the test item a surface tension of 30.7 mN/m at 20± 0.5 °C was determined. Thus, under the conditions of this test, the test item was found to be surface active.

Description of key information

In a study according to EU method A.5 and OECD guideline 115, a surface tension of 30.7 mN/m at 20± 0.5 °C was determined for the test substance. Thus, under the conditions of this test, the test substance was found to be surface active.
