Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
15 Dec - 18 Dec 2017
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Remarks:
The Department of Health of the Government of the United Kingdom
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

Results
Moisture content: 10.78%

Preliminary screening test results

Test No.

Burning time [s]

Comments

Preliminary test

N/A

Slightly discoloured. The sampled glowed orange-red when in contact with the test flame. No flame or propagation observed.

From the preliminary screening (S/T) test the sample was seen not to ignite and therefore no further testing is required.

Classification of substance: Not highly flammable

Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
12 Dec - 18 Dec 2017
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
test procedure in accordance with national standard methods
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
other: Data waiving: Auto-flammability
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: German VDI 2263 Sheet 1
Version / remarks:
Grewer oven test
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Remarks:
The Department of Health of the Government of the United Kingdom
Test procedure:
other: 8 mL of test item heated up to 350 °C in a Grewer apparatus as per German VDI 2263 Sheet 1
Result:
negative outcome (no effect observed)

Results
Was exothermic activity observed during the test: No
Time when sample temperature exceeded reference temperature: N/A

Oven temperature when sample temperature exceeded reference temperature: N/A

Comment

On complete testing the sample was unchanged. The test substance can be exclude from classification as a self-heating solid of UN Class 4.2 as the onset temperature in this screening test exceeds 220 °C.

Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
other:

Description of key information

Not flammable (Preliminary Screening Test, EU Method A.10).

Not self-heating (Grewer oven test).

No pyrophoricity.

No flammability on contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The flammability of the substance was determined according to EU Method A.10.

The substance is not self-heating based on the Grewer oven test up to 350 °C.

Based on the chemical structure and experience in handling and use, pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not expected.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on flammability of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 or Directive 67/548/EEC, and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification:

No propagation of burning in a test according to EU Method A.10.

Grewer Oven Test results exclude self-heating of the substance.

Based on the chemical structure and experience in handling and use, pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not expected.
