Short-term toxicity to aquatic algae - 1 key study for read-across trimellitate surrogate.   
Results from the read-across study indicate that the submission substance, CAS No. 70225-05-7, is not expected to produce any acute toxicity to algae at its maximal water solubility limits.

Additional information

No short-term algae toxicity data for algae were available for the submission substance, CAS No. 70225-05-7. However, read-across data for a structurally related trimellitate ester, tri-2-ethylhexyl trimellitate (TOTM)(CAS No. 3319-31-1) were available to help assess the short-term toxicity in algae for the submission substance.

 

The acute toxicity of the trimellitate surrogate, TOTM, was carried out in freshwater green alga (Selenastrum capricornutum). Nominal loadings of the surrogate material did not produce any acute toxicity to alga at a loading of 100 mg/L relative to controls under the conditions of a limited test. The 72-hr EL50 value was determined to be >100 mg/L loadings and the NOEL (72hr) was estimated to be >100 mg/L loading for the TOTM surrogate material. No inhibition of algal growth (e.g., cell number) are expected for the test material at its maximal water solubility level. 

 

Based on the read-across data and their structural chemical similarity, the submission substance, CAS No. 70225-05-7, would not expected to cause acute toxicity to algae at its maximum water solubility limits.
