Longer chain alkyl lactates tend to be more hydrolytically stable, while the fatty alcohols are not sensitive to hydrolysis. Based on the data for fatty alcohols and the partition coefficients, alkyl lactates tend to adsorb to the organic fraction of sediment or soil. However, all relevant constituents are considered to be readily biodegradable.
