Description of key information
The toxicity of 4,4'-Dimethoxytrityl chloride was tested according to OECD guidelines 201 and 202 for acute toxicity studies with aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia magna) and algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata). No toxic effect on D. magna was observed up to the limit of water solubility (NOEC ≥ 100 mg/L nominal, corresponding to 4.3 mg/L measured). For P. subcapitata a 72 h ErC50 of 1.629 mg/L (95 % C.L. 1.079 – 2.417 mg/L) was determined. The 72 h NOErC is 0.537 mg/L.

Toxicity to invertebrates:
Daphnia magna Straus was exposed for 48 hours to 4,4'-Dimethoxytrityl chloride in a static short-term toxicity study according to the OECD guideline 202 (2004) and in compliance with the OECD-GLP principles. The study was conducted as limit test with a measured concentration of 4.3 mg/L (limit of water solubility; nominal concentration of 100 mg/L). The test concentrations were determined analytically by HPLC-UV. As the measured test item concentrations are not within ± 20 % of the nominal loading rate, according to OECD 202 (2004) and OECD 23 (2000), all results are given in relation to the analytically measured test item concentrations.
No effect on D. magna was observed.
Toxicity to algae:
The freshwater algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was exposed to 4,4'-Dimethoxytrityl chloride for 72 hours in a static toxicity study according to the OECD guideline 201 (2006) and in compliance with the OECD-GLP principles. In this study a 72 h ErC50 (endpoint: growth rate) of 1.629 mg/L (95 % C.L. 1.079 - 2.417 mg/L) and a 72 h NOErC (endpoint: growth rate) of 0.947 mg/L were determined. The test concentrations were determined analytically by HPLC-UV.
