It was technically not possible to prepare a wetting zone, since loss from the sides of the pile could not be avoided due to the high solubility of the test item. Therefore, no wetting zone could be applied beyond the 100 mm timing zone.

The test item melted during the test and finally burned with an orange/yellow flame and turned into a black residue. Grey/black smoke was observed.

The flammability of the substance was determined in a GLP study according to EC A.10 and UN Test N.1. The result of the screening test was showed that in 94 s burning occurred over 50 mm and therefore a full flammability test was needed to accurately have a burning rate. It was technically not possible to prepare a wetted zone because the substance solubilised in water. This may have impacted the results. The time of burning over a distance of 100 mm, after the pile had burned a distance of 80 mm, decreased with each run going from 83 seconds to 38 seconds. This decreasing order is remarkable when the runs are performed independantly and therefore considered equivocal. The average running time is 58 s and this value will be used for the flammability assessment.

Additional information

The flammability of this substance could not be assessed with the flammability test on solids because no wetting zone could be prepared due to the substance solubilising in water. The final conclusion of non flammable is based on the average burning rate of five runs instead of using the lowest one because the individual runs were decreasing every time these were conducted.

A very similar substance (Ethyl maltol) with a melting point of 86oC and a similar density (0.5% < 100 um) was not flammable which supports the absence of flammability of Maltol (Ethyl maltol at the ECHA website: https://echa.europa.eu/nl/registration-dossier/-/registered-dossier/22549/4/14,

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance is equivocal in the UN Test N.1, the average burning rate of 58 s is used. This information is supported with information from Ethyl maltol, which is not flammable. Therefore classification is not needed according to EU CLP 1272/2008 and its amendments.
