Description of key information

The experimental test with ESA was designed to be compatible with Method C.7 Abiotic Degradation, Hydrolysis as a Function of pH of Commission Regulation (EC) No 449/2008 of 30 May 2008 and Method 111 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 13 April 2004.

The results showed that estimated half-life of the ESA at 25 or 5 °C and the pH 4, 7 or 9 was shorter than 2 minutes. At the end of every analysis, the pH of the “hydrolysed” samples had decreased to pH 2 to 3. As the test item is a cyclic organo-sulphate acid ester, the hydrolysis product was proposed to be hydroxyethyl sulphate (MW: 142.1 g/mol, smiles: OCCOS(=O)(=O)O)

In the literature it was found that the structural similar compound 1,3-propanesultone (CAS 1120-71-4) is also highly reactive and therefore rapidly destroyed by heterolysis to form 3-hydroxypropanesulphonic acid (CAS 15909-83-8), with t1/2 110 min.
