Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

(i)       Exposure by inhalation: Move to fresh air immediately, If experiencing difficulty breathing seek medical advice.

(ii)       Exposure by skin contact: Wash off immediately with soap and plenty of water. In the case of skin irritation or allergic reactions see a physician. This product is an uncured photopolymer. Skin contact with exposure to light may cause polymerization (curing) on the skin's surface. Immediate rinsing with soap and water will prevent this hazard. If curing occurs, do not attempt to pull polymer off skin, as it can result in more severe skin  damage.

(iii)       Exposure by eye contact: In the case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

(iv)       Exposure by ingestion: If ingested, seek medical attention immediately and show the label.

Fire-fighting measures

The substance could burn if exposed to high temperatures releasing hazardous combution products such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Suitable extinguishing media is water spray, carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder or appropriate foam.

In a fire wear self-contained breathing apparatus, and protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Do not discharge extinguishing water into the aquatic environment.

Accidental release measures

Keep unprotected persons away. Use spill trays in material transfer areas to collect any spillage.

Personal precautions: Ensure adequate ventilation, wear eye and skin protection

Environmental protection: prevent product form entering drains, soak up with inert absorbent material(e.g sand, silica gel, universal absorbent, sawdust), scoop into suitable prescribed marked containers for disposal according to local/state/federal regulations.

Handling and storage

The substance should be stored, handled and used under conditions of good industrial hygiene and in conformity with any local regulations in order to avoid exposure. Ensure adequate ventilation. Keep away from incompatible materials in accordance with section 10 of the MSDS. Protect skin from substance, use latex or nitrile rubber gloves (or equivalent), overalls, safety glasses. Keep away from open flames, heat or sparks.

Storein original containers at room temperature (<30 °C; excursions <35°C allowed) in a well ventilated area; protect from light wavelengths <400 nm. Keep containers dry and tightly closed.

In case of spillage, no chemical treatment is practicable to neutralise the hazardous health property of the registered substance. Transport only in original containers labelled according to the regulations. Prevent containers from falling

Exposure controls / personal protection

There is no possibility of exporsure during transportation. However, in the case of accidental discharge, recovery is not economically or technically feasible as the registered substance a component of a monomer mix used in contact lens manufacture, the end use requires a high purity raw material.

During use, exposure to the registered substance is minimal as it is used in a virtually closed system for the manufacture of contact lenses.  At the end of the use process, SiMMA2 is polymerised into contact lenses and there is no possibility of leaching. To reduce exposure evne further, PPE such as latex or nitrile rubber gloves (or equivalent), overalls, safety glasses are employed.

Consumers: Consumers do not come im contact with SiMAA2. However, the finished contact lenses will be used by consumers. Exposure to the registered substance will not be applicable in the absence of release from the article (contact lenses).

Stability and reactivity

SiMAA2 is stable under normal conditions of transport and use. It will not degrade, hydrolys or change its chemical identity or purity over time and storage if stored at room temperature (<30 °C; excursions <35°C allowed) in a well ventilated area; protect from light wavelengths <400 nm.

Disposal considerations

Transport: There is no possibility of waste generation under normal conditions of transport. However, in the case of accidental release, SiMAA2 should be incinerated, meanwhile the packaging can be kept for re-use/recycling.  2-Methoxyhydroquinone, synonym 2,5-Dihydroxyanisol, 2-methoxy-1,4-Benzenediol, MEHQ, CAS # 824-46-4, concentration range of 50 to 150 ppm can be added to inhibit uncontrolled polymerization in the monomer mix, prior to shipping for disposal by incineration.

Use: During use within the EU, waste quantities generated is minimal as the registered substance is completedly consumed within the reaction mix during polymerisation. Any contaminated waste will be incinerated. No waste is generated by the public as the public will not come in contact with SiMAA2.

Consumers; SiMAA2 is not directly used by the public. However, its end product is used as a health care product- contact lenses. The contact lenses used by the pulic will be disposed off with domestic waste. However,  the is no possibility of release as the registered substance within the contact lenses is completely consumed during polymerisation. Moreso, there is no possibility of leaching under normal conditions of use.
