N,N-Dimethylbutylamine was readily biodegradable in a valid OECD biodegradation test (TG 301B).

The ready biodegradation of N,N-dimethylbutylamine was determined in an OECD 301B guideline test that was performed under GLP conditions. Activated sludge from a municipal sewage treatment plant was used as inoculum. Positive (aniline) and negative (test medium) controls were included as were abiotic and toxicity controls. The evolution of carbon dioxide was measured using an IC analyser. The number of replicates was 2. Samples were measured in duplicate. The biodegradation of N,N-dimethylbutylamine was 73% after 28 days, and 61% at the end of the 10-day-window. The controls performed as expected and all validity criteria were met. Therefore, N,N-dimethylbutylamine is considered to be readily biodegradable (LAUS, 2012).

This result is in line with another study where N,N-Dimethylbutylamine was easily eliminated from water in a valid Zahn-Wellens test (OECD TG 302B-Inherent biodegradability). The DOC removal was 96% within 13 days. Adsorption to the sludge was not observed.

Based on these results it is concluded that the accumulation potential of N,N-Dimethylbutylamine is low.
