Details on test organisms:
TEST ORGANISM
- Common name: Daphnia magna STRAUS
- Strain/clone: clone 5
- Source: Dr. M. Bergtold, BASF, D-67117 Limburgerhof; the strain originally derived from the Institut National de Recherche Chimique Appliquee, France in 1978
- Age of parental stock: <24 h
- Feeding during test: no

ACCLIMATION
- Type and amount of food: Desmodesmus subspicatus- and/or Chlorella-cells
Test type:
static
Water media type:
freshwater
Limit test:
no
Total exposure duration:
48 h
Test temperature:
19.4 - 20.1 °C
pH:
8.60 - 9.19
Dissolved oxygen:
6.6 - 8.7 mg O2/L
Nominal and measured concentrations:
The test was performed using concentration steps 0.5 mg/1000 mL, 1.1 mg/1000 mL, 2.42 mg/1000 mL, 5.32 mg/1000 mL, 11.71 mg/1000 mL, and 25.77 mg/1000 mL dilution water.
Recoveries of >64 % of the initial values measured at time t0 were obtained in the treatments at concentrations around the EC50 after 48 hr of incubation. Most measured concentrations of the treatments after 48 hr deviated more than 20% from the nominal values. Based on this, the reported effect concentrations should refer to mean measured concentrations (geometric mean) of the measured concentrations.
Details on test conditions:
TEST SYSTEM
- No. of organisms per vessel: 5
- No. of vessels per concentration (replicates): 4

TEST MEDIUM / WATER PARAMETERS
- Source/preparation of dilution water: medium M4 acc. Elendt

OTHER TEST CONDITIONS
- Photoperiod: 16 hr of light and 8 hr of darkness

EFFECT PARAMETERS MEASURED:
After 24 hr and 48 hr the number of immobilised daphnia at each concentration of the test item is recorded
Reference substance (positive control):
yes
Remarks:
The effect of potassium dichromate towards different animals of this breed was tested prior to beginning of the test. Within the analytical part, the test item served as a reference item.
Key result

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
In the test on acute toxicity to Daphnia, the EC50 was determined to be 12.96 mg/L (based on measured concentrations).
Executive summary:

„Reaction Product from Tetrahydro-2,5-dimethoxyfurane, Ethanol and Water“ was tested for acute toxicity towards daphnia according to OECD-Test Guideline 202 (version dated 13-Apr-2004). In order to investigate the influence of the test item towards the daphnias, the swimming behaviour of the animals was recorded. Under the conditions used for the test, there was a immobilisation of the daphnia at concentrations >2.4 mg/L. As a conclusion of the analytical part of this study, it can be stated that the concentrations of „Reaction Product from Tetrahydro-2,5-dimethoxyfurane, Ethanol and Water“ remained sufficiently stable during incubation of 48hr only at the highest concentration step of 25.77 mg/L.At lower concentrations minor TOC concentrations were found. As a result of the supporting analyse it can be stated that the results of the biological part should be based on the measured concentrations applied because the recovery of the nominal concentrations was <80%.
