Executive summary:

The bioaccumulation study in aquatic organisms was conducted for estimating the BCF (bioaccumulation factor) value of test chemical Metam-sodium (CAS no. 137-42-8). The estimated BCF (bioaccumulation factor) value of Metam-sodium was determined to be 3.162 L/Kg, which does not exceed the bioconcentration threshold of 2000, indicating that the chemical Metam-sodium is considered to be non-accumulative in aquatic organisms.

Additional information

Experimental study and various predicted data for the target compound Metam-sodium (CAS No. 137-42-8) and supporting weight of evidence study for its structurally and functionally similar read across substance were reviewed for the bioaccumulation end point which are summarized as below:

In an experimental study from authoritative database (INERIS database, 2009), bioaccumulation study in aquatic organisms was conducted for estimating the BCF (bioaccumulation factor) value of test chemical Metam-sodium (CAS no. 137-42-8). The estimated BCF (bioaccumulation factor) value of Metam-sodium was determined to be 3.162 L/Kg.

Another bioaccumulation study in aquatic organisms was conducted for estimating the BCF (bioaccumulation factor) value of test chemical Metam-sodium (CAS no. 137-42-8) (Pesticide Properties Database, 2017). The estimated BCF (bioaccumulation factor) value of Metam-sodium was evaluated to be 0.03 L/Kg.

From CompTox Chemistry Dashboard using OPERA (OPEn (quantitative) structure-activity Relationship Application)  V1.02 model in which calculation based on PaDEL descriptors (calculate molecular descriptors and fingerprints of chemical), the bioaccumulation i.e BCF for test substance Metam-sodium was estimated to be 6.5 dimensionless . The predicted BCF result based on the 5 OECD principles.

In a supporting weight of evidence study from authoritative database (HSDB and PubChem, 2017) for the read across chemical 1,2-Ethanediylbiscarbamodithioic acid disodium salt (CAS no. 142-59-6),the bioaccumulation study in fish was conducted for estimating the BCF (bioaccumulation factor) value of read across chemical 1,2-Ethanediylbiscarbamodithioic acid disodium salt (CAS no. 142-59-6). The bioaccumulation factor (BCF) value was calculated using a log Kow of -4.24 and a regression-derived equation. The estimated BCF (bioaccumulation factor) value of 1,2 -Ethanediylbiscarbamodithioic acid disodium salt was determined to be 3 dimensionless.

On the basis of above results for target chemical Metam-sodium (from authoritative database INERIS Pesticide Properties databaseand CompTox Chemistry Dashboard,2017) and for its read across substance (from authoritative database HSDB and PubChem), it can be concluded that the BCF value of test substanceMetam-sodiumranges from 0.03 – 6.5 which does not exceed the bioconcentration threshold of 2000, indicating that the chemicalMetam-sodiumis not expected to bioaccumulate in the food chain.
