Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.6 (Water Solubility)
Deviations:
not specified
GLP compliance:
yes
Type of method:
flask method
Water solubility:
49.2 g/L
Temp.:
20 °C
pH:
3.7
Details on results:
Preliminary solubility test
The estimated water solubility is approximately 8.29 g/L. This value means that the shake-flask method had to be applied. Because of the theoretical water solubility (47 g/L) the water solubility test was performed using the theoretical value.
The mean value of the water solubility of Test 1, 2 and 3 is 49.20 ± 0.35 g/L.

Guideline:
EPA OPPTS 830.7860 (Water Solubility Generator Column Method)
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Details of the generator column:
- It consists of a 20-cm section of 6-mm o.d. Pyrex tubing joined to a short section of 9-mm o.d. Pyrex tubing. The 6-mm o.d. section of the column was packed with 100-120 mesh Chromosorb W-HP (solid support) which was held in place by two plugs of silanized glass wool. The column was thermostated at 25.0 ± 0.1 °C by pumping water from a constant-temperature bath through a jacket enclosing column.
- The column was coated with a liquid solute by pulling approximately 2 mL of the liquid through the clean, dry support with gentle suction.
- The aqueous phase of the solute was generated by pumping water into the inlet of the coated generator column either by using a minipump or by means of a water reservoir using compressed air at 5 psi.
- Analysis of the aqueous phase from the pure solute coated column yielded the aqueous solubility.
GLP compliance:
not specified
Type of method:
other: Generator Column Method
Water solubility:
63.3 g/L
Temp.:
25 °C
Remarks on result:
other: pH unknown
Details on results:
The reported water solubility is an average of at least three measurements.
Conclusions:
63.2 g/L at 25°C
Executive summary:

According to a well documented publication (Tewari Y.B. et al, 1982), the water solubilty of Tributyl borate is 63.2 g/L (at 25°C). The measurement was performed with a modified Generator Column Method.

Description of key information

Study scientifically not necessary because tributyl borate is rapidly hydrolyzed to boric acid and n-butanol in the presence of water:

- water solubilty of boric acid: 49.2 g/L (at 20°C)

- water solubilty of n-butanol: 77 g/L at 20°C (handbook data) and 63.2 g/L at 25°C (data from publication); key value (arithmetic mean of the two available values) ca. 70 g/L at 20°C

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
70 g/L
at the temperature of:
20 °C
