Description of key information

The acute toxicity of the substance 4-amino-m-cresol to Fish, Daphnia and Algae was tested according to OECD guidelines and GLP. These tests are considered as reliable (Klimisch 1) and the obtained results are expressed on measured concentrations :

- 96h-LC50/Zebrafish = 0.42 mg/L based on time-weighted mean measured concentration (OECD 236),

- 48h-EC50/Daphnia magna = 0.20 mg/L based on time-weighted mean measured concentration (OECD 202),

- 72h-EC50_growth rate/ Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata = 0.035 mg/L based on geometric mean measured concentrations (OECD 201).

Other acute tests on fish, daphnia and algae were also performed on the degradation products of the substance 4-amino-m-cresol (after ~20 hours aging period). These tests were considered of poor reliability (Klimisch 3) because no analysis was performed. Higher LC50 or EC50 were observed (lower toxicity to Fish, Daphnia and Algae) than in the above reported results.

A chronic toxicity test on Daphnia was also performed according to the guideline OECD 211 and GLP. The NOEC for adult survival, time of the first brood and juveniles produced per surviving parent, and adult growth are equal to 0.22 mg/L based on time-weighted mean measured concentrations, in this 21-day Daphnia magna reproduction study.

The algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata are the most sensitive species in chronic tests with a 72h-EC10_growth rate equal to 0.0098 mg/L based on geometric mean measured concentrations.

The validity criteria were within the acceptable range according to the OECD guidelines for these 2 tests and they were both considered as Klimisch 1.

The substance 4-amino-m-cresol was also tested on activated sludge according to OECD 209 guideline and GLP. 4-amino-m-cresol has an inhibitory effect on the respiration of activated sludge with 3 hour EC50 as 32.3 mg/L, based on nominal concentration.
