Principles of method if other than guideline:
WATER
About 5 mg of the test sample were suspended in 30 ml water (bi dest.) in a sample flask (standard flask for the Büchi Rack R-24, volume 30 ml (Art.-No. 038469)) and were shaken for two hours at 30°C (+/- 2°C) on a “Büchi Syncore Polyvap” (laboratory shaking machine) with 400 rpm. Then shaking was continued at ambient temperature (24 – 25°C) for 70 hours, followed by filtration through a 0.05 μm membrane filter (Fa. Schleicher und Schuell, NC 05, Ref.-No.: 402110) (on the filter there remained a residue of not dissolved colorant).
The resulting clear solution was measured by UV-vis spectrometry and the absorption was determined at 583 nm. The concentration of the sample could be determined by applying the Lambert-Beer rule. A calibration curve of Solvent Violet 13 in DMSO (Merck, für die Spektroskopie “Uvasol”, Bestell-Nr.: 1.02950.2500) was used for that purpose.
The determination was repeated for three times.

OCTANOL
About 20 mg of the test sample were suspended in 30 ml octanol (Aldrich, spectrophotometric grade) in a sample flask (standard flask for the Büchi Rack R-24, volume 30 ml (Art.-No. 038469)) and were shaken for two hours at 30°C (+/- 2°C) on a “Büchi Syncore Polyvap” (laboratory shaking machine) with 400 rpm. Then shaking was continued at ambient temperature (24 – 25°C) for 70 hours, followed by filtration through a 0.2 μm membrane filter (Fa. Schleicher und Schuell, TE 35, Ref.-No.: 411411) and then through two 0.2 μm membrane filters (Fa. Schleicher und Schuell, TE 35, Ref.-No.: 411411) (on the filter there remained a residue of not dissolved colorant).
The resulting clear solution was measured by UV-vis spectrometry and the absorption was deter-mined at 585 nm. The concentration of the sample could be determined by applying the Lam-bert-Beer rule. A calibration curve of Solvent Violet 13 in DMSO (Merck, für die Spektroskopie “Uvasol”, Bestell-Nr.: 1.02950.2500) was used for that purpose.
The determination was repeated for three times.

Details on results:
Solubilities of the test item measured at ambient temperature (24-25 °C):
- In water: 0.93 mg/L
- In octanol: 170 mg/L

Based on the calibration curve of the test item in DMSO (Merck, "Uvasol”) the concentration of the sample was determined by applying the Lambert-Beer rule.

Individual results:

Water

   Absorption (d = 10 cm)  µg/L
 a1  0.001719  10.1
 a2  0.002142  11.3
 a3  0.000401  6.6

Octanol

    Absorption (d = 10 cm, dilution 1:50)  g/L
 a1  0.1245  0.17
 a2  0.1269  0.17
 a3  0.1349  0.18
Conclusions:
The partition coefficient (logPow) of Solvent Violet 13 was estimated to be 4.26 at 25 °C.
Executive summary:

The partition coefficient (logPow) of Solvent Violet 13 was estimated to be 4.26 based on solubilities in water (0.93 mg/L) and octanol (170 mg/L) measured at ambient conditions (24-25 °C).
