Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
18 September 2017 to 20 September 2017
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Version / remarks:
2008
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
other: substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 4 minutes test period

The test material failed to ignite during the 2 minutes that the flame was applied even though it sparked, crackled and began to soften. The result of the preliminary test obviated the need to perform the main test.

Interpretation of results:
other: Not highly flammable in accordance with EU criteria
Conclusions:
Under the conditions of this study, the test material is considered ‘not highly flammable’.
Executive summary:

The flammability of the test material was investigated in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.10 under GLP conditions.

The test material failed to ignite during the 2 minutes that the flame was applied even though it sparked, crackled and began to soften. The result of the preliminary test obviated the need to perform the main test.

Under the conditions of this study, the test material is considered ‘not highly flammable’.

Description of key information

Flammability (solids)

Under the conditions of this study, the test material is considered ‘not highly flammable’.

Pyrophoricity

In accordance with point 1 of Annex XI, it is considered justified to omit the testing for pyrophoric properties. Testing does not appear scientifically necessary as experience in use and experience of handling the substance indicates that it does not possess pyrophoric properties.

Flammability in contact with water

In accordance with point 1 of Annex XI, it is considered justified to omit the testing for substances or mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases. Testing does not appear scientifically necessary as experience in use and experience of handling the substance indicates that it does not emit flammable gases in contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Flammability (solids)

The flammability of the test material was investigated in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.10 under GLP conditions. The study was awarded a reliability score of 1 in accordance with the criteria set forth by Klimisch et al. (1997).

The test material failed to ignite during the 2 minutes that the flame was applied even though it sparked, crackled and began to soften. The result of the preliminary test obviated the need to perform the main test.

Under the conditions of this study, the test material is considered ‘not highly flammable’.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In accordance with the criteria for classification as defined in Annex I, Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, the substance does not require classification with respect to flammability.
