Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Physicochemical processes like phototransformation and hydrolysis are not relevant for the black pigment due to the lack of fluorophoric groups and non-measurable water solubility (at all pH-values). Lead is present as lanarkite predominately. Formation of different Pb-hydroxides may occur, but the chemical assessment cannot make any differentiation among the different Pb-species (pooling of different speciation forms). In addition, magnetite (Fe3O4) is virtually insoluble in the environment at the prevailing pH-domain.

Consequently, (abiotic) degradation is an irrelevant process for the black pigment.
