Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 115 (Surface Tension of Aqueous Solutions)
Deviations:
not applicable
Principles of method if other than guideline:
In the Du Nouy ring method, a platinum-iridium ring is hung parallel to the liquid surface. The ring is immersed in the liquid then pulled up through the liquid surface. The maximum force required to pull the ring through the surface is used to calculate the surface tension
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
ring method
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Thetawet FS-8250 is a 28% actives aqueous emulsion, water dispersible, low foam anionic fluorosurfactant. The active components are ammonium salts of [Mono & Di] 2-(Perfluorohexyl)ethyl-Phosphate. Found ca. 10% and 18% respectively in the final product

This result is the average of five measurements as follows.

The test solution was 0.1056g in 100 ml of DI water. The active ingrredient is ca. 28% in the product, hence the actual active ingredient concentration is estimated to be 296 mg/l

Description of key information

The surface tension of aqueous solutions and emulsions can be reduced to ca. 19 dynes/cm with Thetawet FS-8250 at 300 mg/l active ingredient, which is equivalent to ca. 1000 mg/l on the substance as commercially available.

This low surface tension results in better wetting, spreading, and penetration.

Additional information

This reaction mass substance is a 28% actives aqueous emulsion, water dispersible, low foam anionic fluorosurfactant. The substance is functionally surface active, forming emulsions in water and oil

The active components are ammonium salts of [Mono & Di] 2-(Perfluorohexyl)ethyl-Phosphate. Found at ca. 10% and 18% respectively in the final product.

The substance is not possible to isolate from water and if attempted, there is decomposition with a loss of ammonia.
