Executive summary:

General physico-chemical properties of the test item have been determined.

Methods employed are designed to be compatible with those specified in Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008, Part A: Methods for the determination of physico-chemical properties.

Method

The flammability (solids) was determined by measuring the burning rate of test item prepared as a pile of set dimensions. Testing was conducted using a method designed to be compatible with Method A10 Flammability (Solids) of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008.

Conclusion

The test item has been determined to be not highly flammable as it failed to ignite in the preliminary screening test.

Additional information

Potassium salts of HEDP are involatile and are demonstrated to have high melting temperature of >450°C. The requirement to test the substance for pyrophoricity and flammability in contact with water was waived in accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex IX, because there is no indication on the basis of structure and experience in use and handling that the substance is pyrophoric (flammable in contact with air) or flammable in contact with water.

 

Preliminary screening studies were performed with HEDP acid and HEDP-4Na according to test method A.10 flammability of solids. In both cases the test material failed to ignite and no further testing was performed. These results are read-across to potassium salts of HEDP as the salts are not expected to exhibit higher flammable properties than their corresponding acids.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Potassium salts of HEDP are not classified for flammability based on read-across from HEDP-acid and HEDP-4Na. Both substances failed to ignite in preliminary screening studies performed in accordance with EU test method A.10.
