Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Key result for CAS# 297730-93-9:
Proposed adaptation of testing requirements due to lack of exposure.
Key result for PFBA (degradation product):
72-h EC50 (growth rate under OECD203) to Chlorella vulgaris : >987 mg/L.
72-h NOEC (growth rate under OECD203) to Chlorella vulgaris : 987 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

We propose to waive testing of toxicity to algae and cyanobacteria on CAS# 297730-93-9 due to lack of exposure. The primary fate of CAS# 297730-93-9 is expected to be photolysis to HF, TFA, and PFBA. These acids are highly soluble and are expected to reside ultimately in the aquatic compartment. HF and TFA are subjects of existing risk assessments. Two studies evaluated the toxicity of PFBA to green algae. The key study for PFBA was performed in accordance with accepted test guidelines and GLP criteria, had supporting analytical data, and was reliable without restrictions. In the supporting study, the 96-hour EC50 (cell count) of PFBA to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was likely to be ca. 500 mg/L PFBA. The reliability of this study could not be assessed because the test method and conditions were not well described. PFBA is not toxic to algae or cyanobacteria according to GHS criteria.
