Based on the available data on its physical and chemical properties, heptanal is a colourless liquid with a melting point of approximately -42°C, a boiling point in the range of 155.92 -160.4°C at standard pressure and a relative density of around 0,82 at 20°C.

It is considered as a moderate volatility substance with a vapour pressure of 500 Pa at 20°C and 660 Pa at 25°C. It has a viscosity of 0.977 mPa.s at 15°.

Heptanal is very sensitive to oxidation into heptanoic acid, although it has not been possible to determine the kinetic of oxidation. Therefore no experimental value of water solubility can be determined and it has been estimated the average value for the sum of heptanal and heptanoic acid at 2 030 mg/L. According to this value, heptanal is considered to be soluble in water and to have a low potential for bioaccumulation based on an experimental logKow value of 2,8. It dissociation constant is pKa= -5.2. Therefore it is considered to be undissociated under normal conditions.

Besides, heptanal is a flammable liquid based on its flash point of 42 °C. It has an auto-ignition temperature of 205°C at 990 hPa.

Based on its chemical structure, heptanal is not expected to be explosive nor to have oxidising properties.
