Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Tetrachlorophthalic anhydride hydrolysed rapidly in contact with water with a half-life of less than 5 minutes forming the hydrolysis product tetrachlorophthalic acid (CAS 632-58-6).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life for hydrolysis:
5 min
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

As the test substance tetrachlorophthalic anhydride was expected to undergo rapid hydrolysis to tetrachlorophthalic acid (CAS 632-58-6), the hydrolysis behaviour of the test susbtance in aqueous solutions was investigated with preliminary tests at room temperature at pH 4, pH 7 and pH 9, in deviation to the OECD TG 111. Degradation of tetrachlorophthalic anhydride and the formation of its hydrolysis product tetrachlorophthalic acid were monitored by HPLC analysis using UV-detection. The concentrations of formed tetrachlorophthalic acid in the hydrolysis test solutions were determined by external calibration method and correspond to the theoretical values assuming a complete degradation of the tetrachlorophthalic anhydride. An immediate degradation of the test substance was observed, and an exact determination of the half-life time or the hydrolysis rate was not possible. Therefore, the half-life time (t ½) is set to be lower than 5 minutes.
