Description of key information

Two studies were used to define the toxicokinetic behaviour of "Sulfonation products of (esterification products of C9-11 (branched and linear) alkyl-(mono-, di- and tri-)glycosides with maleic anhydride) with disodium sulfite": an oral study with mice and an in vitro study with samples of human skin to evaluate dermal absorption. Both studies pertains to secondary literature and both were performed with substances similat to "Sulfonation products of (esterification products of C9-11 (branched and linear) alkyl-(mono-, di- and tri-)glycosides with maleic anhydride) with disodium sulfite", according to a category approach.

Additional information

Radiolabeled alkyl polyglucosides were administered by gavage to female NMRI mice. Two hours after treatment the animals were sacrificed and relevant organs were analyzed to determine distribution in specific organs. Stomach, intestines, liver and kidney showed the highest concenration of radioactivity for the compounds. Alkyl polyglycosides are transformed into glucose and fatty alcohol, which enter the metabolic pathways of carbohydrates and fatty acids, respectively. No toxic intermediates were formed. The high level in the urine indicated rapid degradation and elimination of the test items.

The dermal penetration of alkyl polyglucosides was evaluated in vitro using human skin. The mean absorbed dose, as the sum of the amounts found in the viable epidermis, dermis, and receptor medium, was 0.01%.
