Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Studies on fish, Daphnia and algae using excess loadings of SAS or NAS (sodium aluminosilicate) [read-across] showed no acute toxicity; physical effects on the survival of Daphnia were observed in tests using unfiltered test medium. Test results, based on loading rates, are as follows: 96h-LL0 (Brachydanio rerio)= 10,000 mg/l for SAS (two studies) and NAS (one study); 24h-EL50(Daphnia magna)>10,000 mg/l for SAS (three studies); 72h-NOEL(Scenedesmus subspicatus)= 10,000 mg/l for NAS. For magnesium silicate a read-across is proposed and no further testing due to the no acute toxicity observed for SAS and NAS.

There are no chronic aquatic toxicity data, but due to the known inherent physico-chemical properties, absence of acute toxic effects as well as the ubiquitous presence of silica/silicates in the environment, there is no evidence of harmful long-term effects arising from exposure to synthetic amorphous silica/magnesium or sodium aluminium silicates.
