Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:

The evaluation of the endpoint sensitisation of methyl formate (CAS 107-31-3) is based on a weight of evidence approach using the toxicological data of the metabolites formic acid (CAS 64-18-6) and methanol (CAS 67-56-1) (for WoE information, see chapter 13.2).

No data were located for methylformate, but there is sufficient evidence that methylformate is not sensitising. There is no structural alert that methylformate itself binds to proteins to cause sensitisation. Formic acid and methanol may result from the enzymatic cleavage of methylformate. Both formic acid and methanol were negative in valid sensitisation studies using Guinea pigs in a Buehler test and in Magnussen-Kligman test, respectively.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
There is sufficient evidence that methylformate is not sensitising.

Justification for classification or non-classification

No classification as there is sufficient evidence that methylformate is not sensitising.
