Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The viscosity of members of this category have been measured in the range 1.66 mm2/s at 20°C (C12) – 6.84 mm2/s at 20°C (C16) indicating that viscosity increases with carbon number. The viscosity of C8 category members is therefore expected to be <1.66 mm2/s at 20°C.

In a guideline, proprietary study (Evonik 2009) the kinematic viscosity of 97280-83-6 was found to be 1.66 mm2/s (static) at 20°C. In a guideline, proprietary study (Aqura 2009) the kinematic viscosity of tetrabutene was found to be 6.84 mm2/s (static) at 20°C and 3.96mm2/s(static) at 40°C. In a proprietary supporting study (Aqura 2009) the dynamic viscosity of tetrabutene was found to be 5.55 mPa.s at 20°C.

These data will be read across to other members of the category.

New data areavilable for 5 streams in this category from Intertek (2018):

EC# 500-001-0_Intertek 2019_Key: 2.4655 mm2/s at 40ºC.

EC# 500-004-7_Intertek 2019_Key: 2.2383 mm2/s at 40ºC

EC# 293-263-8_Intertek 2019_Key: 1.416 mm2/s at 40ºC

EC# 306-479-5_Intertek 2019_Key: 1.232 mm2/s at 40ºC.

EC# 293-262-2_Intertek 2019_Key: 3.419 mm2/s at 40ºC.

The mean of the static viscosity values for the category is 4.25 mm2/s at 20°C and this has been used to complete the 'key value for chemical safety assessment'.
