Description of key information

Appearance:

On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, 2-amino-3,5-dimethylbenzene-1-sulfonic acid was observed to be a white solid powder.

Melting point:

The melting point determination of 2-amino-3,5-xylenesulphonic acid (CAS No. 88-22-2) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test was conducted in replicates and Mean Melting Temperature Range was determine to be 337.3-341.1°C at 966.6hPa.

Boiling Point:

The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid which melts above 300°C .The melting point determination of 2-amino-3,5-xylenesulphonic acid (CAS No. 88-22-2) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test was conducted in replicates and Mean Melting Temperature Range was determine to be 337.3-341.1°C at 966.6hPa.

Density:

The density of test item 2-amino-3,5-xylenesulphonic acid (CAS No. 88-22-2)was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to the Adapted from ASTM D854-02 using pyknometer The mean density of test item was determine to be 0.7858 g/cm³ at 20°C and 968.7 hPa.

Particle size distribution:

The particle size distribution of test item 2-amino-3,5-xylenesulphonic acid (CAS No. 88-22-2 ) was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determine to be in the range of 150 micron to bottom pan.

Vapour pressure:

The study does not need to be conducted because the melting point is above 300°C .The melting point determination of 2-amino-3,5-xylenesulphonic acid (CAS No. 88-22-2) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test was conducted in replicates and Mean Melting Temperature Range was determine to be 337.3-341.1°C at 966.6hPa.

Partition coefficient:

The partition coefficient (n-octanol/water) of test substance 2-amino-3,5-xylenesulphonic acid (CAS No. 88-22-2) was determined as per the HPLC method (OECD Guideline-117). The Log Pow value was determined to be 0.814 ± 0.018 dimensionless at 25°C.

Water solubility:

The water solubility determination of test item 2-amino-3,5-dimethylbenzene-1-sulfonic acid;CAS No.88-22-2 was done by spectrophotometric method. The water solubility was determine to be 3049.2 mg/L at 25°C.

Surface tension:

Based on the data from ACD labs, surface tension for 2-amino-3,5-dimethylbenzene-1-sulfonic acid was predicted to be 0.0574 N/m.

Flash point:

The flash point determination of 2-amino-3,5-xylenesulphonic acid (CAS No. 88-22-2)was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was determine to be 149°C at 967.8 hPa.

Auto flammability:

2-amino-3,5-dimethylbenzene-1-sulfonic acid did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that  2-amino-3,5-dimethylbenzene-1-sulfonic acid is not auto-flammable.

Flammability:

2-amino-3,5-dimethylbenzene-1-sulfonic acid does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that 2-amino-3,5- dimethylbenzene-1 -sulfonic acid is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus 2-amino-3,5-dimethylbenzene-1-sulfonic acid was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.

Explosiveness:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties.

Oxidizing properties:

The study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance contains oxygen or halogen atoms which are chemically bonded only to carbon or hydrogen and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied.

pH :

The pH determination of test item 2-amino-3,5-xylenesulphonic acid (CAS No 88-22-2) was done following OECD guideline 122. pH of 1% w/v dispersion was measured with the help of pH meter and it was observed to be 2.18 at 25.8 °C.

Based on the key study from study report,the partition Coefficient n-octanol/water of test chmeical 2-amino-3,5-xylenesulphonic acid (CAS No. 88-22-2) was determined by the Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatographic method according to OECD Guideline No. 117 for testing of Chemicals. The reference substances were chosen according to estimated Pow range of the test substance and generalized calibration graph was prepared.The reference substances were having Pow value ranging from 1.5 to 4.6 .The Log Pow value was determined to be 0.814 ± 0.018 dimensionless at 25°C.This value indicates that the substance is hydrophilic in nature.

Based on the available data in a key study from modelling database using the KOWWIN V1.68 program, the partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the substance 2 -amino-3,5 -dimethylbenzene- 1 -sulfonic acid was estimated to be -0.99.

Additional supporting study from modeling database indicates that the partition coefficient (log Pow) value of the substance 2-amino-3,5-dimethylbenzene-1-sulfonic acid was estimated to be 1.1.

Thus, on the basis of logPow value, chemical 2-amino-3,5-dimethylbenzene-1-sulfonic acid can be considered to be hydrophilic in nature.

Water solubility:

The water solubility determination of test item 2-amino-3,5-dimethylbenzene-1-sulfonic acid (CAS No. 88 -22 -2) was done as per the OECD guideline 105 by spectrophotometric analytical method as per OECD 101. The solubility of ( 2 -amino-3,5 -dimethylbenzene-1 -sulfonic acid of 88 -22 -2 ) in water was determine to be 3049.2 mg/L at 25°C. From above water solubility value it is concluded that 2 -amino-3,5 -dimethylbenzene-1 -sulfonic acid soluble in water.
