Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

One reliable study (BASF XXVI/48, 1976) covering oral, inhalative and other routes acute toxicity is available. The resulting LD50 in rats is about 5600 mg/kg bw, no mortalities were found in an inhalation risk test in rats within 8h and intraperitoneal injection gave an LD50 between 1000 and 1470 mg/kg bw in mice. Regarding dermal acute toxicity there is only secondary literature for phthalic anhydride available (Biofax 13-4/1970) stating an LD 50 of 10000 mg/kg bw.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Acute toxicity: via oral route

Endpoint conclusion
Dose descriptor:
LD50
Value:
5 600 mg/kg bw

Acute toxicity: via dermal route

Endpoint conclusion
Dose descriptor:
LD50
Value:
10 000 mg/kg bw

Additional information

The substance was tested for acute toxicity orally, inhalative and intraperitoneally - the dermal LD50 was investigated by phthalic anhydride. No mortality or other symptoms were found after an 8 h exposure in an inhalation risk test. Symptoms and a bad general condition were found after oral, dermal or intraperitoneal exposure but only at doses above the classification threshold.
