Additional information

Since no studies investigating the short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates of Fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., branched and linear, di- and triesters with trimethylolpropane (former CAS 85005-23-8) are available for this endpoint, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across to the structurally related category member Fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C16-18-unsatd. (even numbered), triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS 68002-79-9) was conducted. Compared to Fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., branched and linear, di and triesters with trimethylolpropane (EC-No. 931-531-4) the read-across substance Fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C16-18-unsatd. (even numbered), triesters with trimethylolpropane is characterized by similar fatty acid component (C18 unsatd. (source substance) compared to C16-18, C18 unsatd. linear and branched (target)). Therefore, based on the structural similarity it is possible to use the available data for the assessment of the target substance. This read-across is justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID Section 6.1) and within the category justification in IUCLID Section 13. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance was used for the assessment. Nevertheless, as it can be seen in the data matrix of the category justification in section 13 and the overall summary (IUCLID section 6.1), all reliable data in the category support the hazard assessment of each category member by showing a consistent pattern of results.

The study with the read-across substance Fatty acids, C14-18 and C16-18 unsatd., triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS 68002-79-9), was performed according to OECD 202 with Daphnia magna and resulted in an EC10 (48 h) > 1000 mg/L and EC50 (48 h) of > 1000 mg/L (nominal). One available test result (EC50 > 100 mg/L (nominal), NOEC (nominal) = 1 mg/L) for Fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., branched and linear, di- and triesters with trimethylolpropane (former CAS 85005-23-8) should be evaluated with caution, because optimum test conditions (i.e. two exposure vessel were placed in a 2 L vessel containing test medium; test material addition and dispersion is inconsistent) were not met (Harding, 1997). Nonetheless, all data show toxicities of Fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., branched and linear, di- and triesters with trimethylolpropane (former CAS 85005-23-8) far in excess of natural occurring concentrations (water solubility < 0.92 mg/L).

Based on the result from one structurally related read-across substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which is characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded that Fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., branched and linear, di- and triesters with trimethylolpropane (former CAS 85005-23-8) will not exhibit short-term effects to aquatic invertebrates up to the limit of water solubility.
