Endpoint:
biodegradation in water: inherent biodegradability
Remarks:
Zahn Wellens: Biodegradation in water
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
17 March 1987
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
comparable to guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 302 B (Inherent biodegradability: Zahn-Wellens/EMPA Test)
Version / remarks:
According to CIBA's in-house SOP method A-37
Deviations:
not specified
GLP compliance:
no
Specific details on test material used for the study:
FAT 40278/A
Oxygen conditions:
aerobic
Inoculum or test system:
activated sludge (adaptation not specified)
Details on inoculum:
Activated sludge should be taken from a municipal waste-water treatment plant which has been rinsed with municipal water for 2 times. The sediment is taken to estimate the dry weight according to method A-26. The activated sludge is prepared one day before the start of the experiment, ventilated overnight and adjusted to a concentration of 600 mg/L.
Duration of test (contact time):
28 d
Key result
Parameter:
% degradation (TOC removal)
Value:
49
Sampling time:
28 d
Validity criteria fulfilled:
not specified
Interpretation of results:
inherently biodegradable, fulfilling specific criteria
Conclusions:
FAT 40278/A is inherently biodegradable
Executive summary:

In a study performed according to the Zahn-Wellens test procedure which is similar to OECD guideline 302 B, FAT 40278/A was assessed for biodegradation potential at the end of the 28-day experimental period. The initial test substance concentration was 145 mg/l TOC. At the end of 28 days 49 % TOC was observed, indicating the test substance FAT 40278/A is inherently biodegradable.

Description of key information
