Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The physical size and number of carbon atoms in paraffins, petroleum waxes and related materials severely limits the ability of these materials to be taken up into living organisms. It is accepted that the ecotoxicity of alkanes of carbon number greater than C10 are not acutely toxic to aquatic organisms at their limit of solubility in water. The paraffins and petroleum waxes, containing hydrocarbons greater than C13, would not be expected to cause acute toxicity to aquatic organisms. The results of toxicity tests with lubricant base oils, which have similar hydrocarbon ranges and some structures in common, show no acute toxicity to invertebrates, or algae.

All test show a LC50/EL50/NOEC > water solubility.

In case of Acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates no immobilisation is reported.

In case of toxicity to aquatic plants the LC50 of C14 -17-Alkanes is expected to be > water solubility.
