Additional information

The acute toxicity of phthalonitrile (CAS 91-15-6) against aquatic invertebrates was assessed in a guideline study according to OECD 202 with Daphnia magna as test organism (MITI, 1999). The study was performed using a static procedure, following GLP and the test item concentrations were analytically verified. The 48-h EC50 was 211 mg/L (nominal). This study was selected as key study.


This result was supported by a guideline test according to the U.S. EPA guideline EG-1 using a static procedure and Daphnia magna as test species (BASF AG, 1987). The exposure of Daphnia magna to different concentrations of phthalonitrile resulted in an EC50 of 219 mg/l (nominal) after 48 hours. This study was performed without analytically verification of the test item. However, the test item can be considered as stable under test and storage conditions according to results of the chemical analysis of phthalonitrile in the key study.


Based on the available results the substance is with high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic organisms.
