test procedure in accordance with national standard methods with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
slightly different test methods
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The test methods are described in another document. This does not impair the conclusion of the test results.
The principles of the test methods including their deviations to the guideline are described in detail in the field "any other information on materials and methods".

Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test over 100 mm length
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

1. 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitrile could not be ignited by the 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the dried substance. 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitrile was melting. (“Bewertungszahl” BWZ 1).

2. 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitril could not be ignited by an open gas flame held onto the substance for approx. 10-15 seconds. 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitril was melting (“Bewertungszahl” BWZ 1).

3. 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitril could not be ignited when put into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds ("Bewertungszahl" BWZ 1).

In a mixture with potassium nitrate and 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitril deflagration and burning off was observed ("Bewertungszahl" BWZ 6).

Substances rated with BWZ 2 are not considered to cause a propagating fire after ignition

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
Under the conditions of the present tests 2,3-Dichlorobenzonitrile can not be ignited. Therefore 2,3-Dichlorobenzonitrile does not need to be classified as flammable.
Executive summary:

The tests were conducted according to guidelines similar to guideline A.10.

2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitrile was dried before testing. The dried 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitrile could not be ignited by the 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the substance. 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitrile was melting.

In a second test approx. 200 mg of 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitrile were put into a flat iron bowl and heated with an open gas flame burner for 10-15 seconds. 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitrile could not be ignited and was melting.

In a third test approx. 150 mg 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitrile and a 1:1 mixture of 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitrile with potassium nitrate was put into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds.

2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitril could not be ignited when put into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds. In a mixture with potassium nitrate and 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitril deflagration and burning off was observed.

Therefore it is concluded that 2,3 -Dichlorobenzonitrile could not be ignited and is not flammable.
