Conclusions:
The study was conducted according to OECD guideline 203 and EPA OPP 72-1 on ethoxyquin (CAS 91-53-2) itself. The study is specified in a draft assessment report and can be considered scientifically reasonable with no deficiencies in documentation or deviations from the guidelines. Hence, the validity criteria were met and the results can be considered as reliable to assess the toxicity of the test item towards rainbow trout.
Short term toxicity to fish was tested in a flow-through test design, the 96-hour LC50 value for rainbow trout exposed to ethoxyquin was 18 mg ethoxyquin/L based on mortality.
Executive summary:

The 96-hour LC50 value for rainbow trout exposed to ethoxyquin was 18 mg ethoxyquin/L. The 95 % confidence limits were 14 and 23 mg ethoxyquin/L. The no mortality concentration was 14 mg ethoxyquin/L. Based on the clinical signs of toxicity observed in the 7.0 and 14.0 mg ethoxyquin/L treatment groups, the NOEC was considered to be 3.5 mg ethoxyquin/ L.

Additional information

There is a valid, peer-reviewed OECD 203 guideline study without relevant deviations on ethoxyquin itself available, assessed with Klimisch 2. In this study, the following LC50 value was determined: 18 mg/L (96 h). The result can be considered as sufficiently reliable to assess the toxicity of ethoxyquin to fish (rainbow trout).

Based on the obtained result, the test item does not need to be classified as acute hazardous to the aquatic environment according to the Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
