Conclusion on classification

The aquatic toxicity was tested on all tropic levels and showed that fish are the most sensitive species with an 96h LC50 of 0.174 mg/L. Two chronic values are present; one from the algal assay of 11 mg/L and one from a Daphnia magna reproduction study, which gave the lowest EC10 on reproduction of 0.205 mg/L. 1,3-bis(3-methyl-2,5-dioxo-1H-pyrrolinylmethyl)benzene is biotically degradable however the criterion of >70% COD or 60% CO2 evolution was not reached within 28 days. The substance is abiotically degradable with a half-life of 68.5 hours at 25°C. The CLP regulation states (chapter 4.1.2.9.4) that hydrolysis can be considered if the hydrolysis products do not fulfill the criteria for being hazardous to the aquatic envirionment. However the hydrolyis products are unknown and therefore cannot be evaluated. The following classifications are applicable

1. H400: Based on the lowest acute value of 0.174 mg/L the substance is aquatic acute cat. 1

2. H411: Based on the lowest chronic value of 0.205 mg/L for degradable substances with unknown hydrolysis products, 1,3-bis(3-methyl-2,5-dioxo-1H-pyrrolinylmethyl)benzene is aquatic chronic cat. 2.
