Description of key information

Since TRIS HCl is well soluble in water, is not volatile, and has low adsorption potential, its main target compartment in the environment is likely to be water. Accumulation in organisms is unlikely, due to the low log Pow value of -3.6. Based on analogy it can be concluded that TRIS HCl is readily biodegradable and is therefore expected to be degraded by microorganisms in the environment within a short period of time. Since it will be eliminated by biodegradation, hydrolysis is not expected to be an important process in the fate of TRIS HCl nor has any considerable effect on the stability of the test substance during the aquatic toxicity studies performed with the substance.

Due to the low vapour pressure of 0,000027 Pa at 20 °C and a low Henry low constant (8.7E-8 Pa; HENRYWIN (v3.20), Bond estimation) it is concluded that TRIS HCl will not accumulate in air and will not be transported through the vapour phase into other environmental compartments in relevant amounts. Thus, air is not a likely route of environmental contamination and no accumulation and subsequent deposition of TRIS HCl is to be expected.
