Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Description of key information

An acute Daphnia toxicity study (Dill DC, Milazzo DP, Lehr KM (1988)) was conducted using Daphnia Magna. The study showed that the 48 hour LC50 was 590 mg/L which is greater than the water solubility; approximately 300 mg/L. Based on measured concentrations, the no-observed-effect-level was 174 mg/L.
Two additional acute toxicity studies were also available (Manning CS (1988b) and Manning CS (1988c)) on Crassostrea virginica (Eastern Oyster) and Palaemonetes vulgaris respectively. These studies gave 96 hour LC50 values of > 173 mg/L and > 349 mg/L respectively. Although reliable (Klimisch 1), these studies were not selected as key as they were conducted on marine species that are not commonly used to address this REACH endpoint. As such, they are provided as supporting information.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

The key study was selected on the basis that it is a reliable guidleline study conducted in accordance with the principles of GLP and performed on the the species (Daphnia magna Straus) most commonly used to address this endpoint.

The supporting studies also confirmed that the substance is practically non-toxic to aquatic invertebrates.
