Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The substance is considered as not ready biodegradable according to OECD 301 D (ECHA disseminated dossier, November 2017 for CAS 76-05-1).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed

Additional information

A read-across to CAS 2923-18-4 (sodium trifluoroacetic acid) was made (ECHA disseminated dossier, November 2017 for CAS 76-05-1), as no study data are available for trifluoroacetic acid. No biodegradation was observed neither in a closed-bottle test on ready biodegradability following OECD guideline 301D nor in a Modified SCAS-Test on inherent biodegradability following OECD guideline 302A. Thus, sodium trifluoroacetic acid was classified as not biodegradable.

This is in line with the results obtained in a non GLP-study, not following an international guideline, which was performed with 14C-TFA in order to check the ability of aerobic bacteria strains to degrade TFA by producing 14CO2. In the end it was shown that none of the nine bacterial strains were able to metabolize TFA (ECHA disseminated dossier, September 2017 for CAS 76-05-1).
