Executive summary:

p-phenylenediamine causes gene mutation in bacteria following metabolic activation while results are negative without activation. Predominantly no effect on gene mutation were observed in fungi, even with metabolic activation, while positive results were recorded in mammalian cells. The damaging effects of p-phenylenediamine on DNA and chromosomes vary according to the test system, and both positive and negative findings have been obtained. p-phenylenediamine has been observed to form strongly mutagenic oxidation products which influence test results.
