Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

The PBT Assessment for decanoic acid is based on the criteria set out in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment” (ECHA, 2012).

Persistence

Decanoic acid (CAS 334-48-5) is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria (62 – 105 % after 30 d). Thus, the substance does not meet the screening criterion for persistence and is not considered to be persistent (P) or very persistent (vP).

Bioaccumulation

Decanoic acid has a log Pow between 4.02 and 4.09 (≤ 4.5) at room temperature and neutral pH. Thus, the substance does not meet the screening criterion for bioaccumulation and is not considered to be bioaccumulative (B) or very bioaccumulative (vB).

Toxicity

Long-term toxicity testing with Daphnia magna resulted in an NOEC (21 d) of 0.2 mg/L (≥ 0.01 mg/L). Moreover, the substance is not classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (7th ATP). Thus, the criteria set out in Annex XIII of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 are not met and the test substance is not considered to meet the T criterion.
