Description of key information

Toxicity to activated sludge microorganisms was tested in a GLP and guideline compliant study according to OECD 209 on a structural analogue. No respiration inhibition was observed up to the limit test concentration of 100 mg/L. No EC50 or EC10 can be established, the NOEC is ≥ 100 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
100 mg/L

Additional information

An activated sludge respiration inhibition test was carried out to the specifications of OECD test guideline 209. This test measures the 3 hour median effect concentration (EC50) and 3 hour no observed effect concentration (NOEC) of the test substance on the respiration rate of activated sludge micro-organisms, typical of those found in domestic sewage treatment. Effects were determined by measuring oxygen uptake using an oxygen electrode.

The results obtained (based on nominal exposure concentrations) were:

3 hour EC50 ≥100 mg/L

3 hour NOEC ≥ 100 mg/L

No adverse effects on respiration of microorganisms were observed.
