Stability

A study was performed to determine the rate of hydrolysis as a function of pH, according to OECD Guideline 111. Half-life times of greater than 1 year at 25°C were obtained at pH 4, 7 and 9.

Biodegradation

In a test carried out in accordance with OECD Guideline 301 F (Ready Biodegradability: Manometric Respirometry Test), the test substance showed no significnat degradation in 28 days and therefore cannot be considered readily biodegradable.

Bioaccumulation

No bioaccumulation study is requred at the registered tonnage band, however an the octanol/water partition coefficient has been determined and found to be Log Pow = 6.0. As this value is greater than 3 it indicates that TCD may have potential to bioacummulate.

Transport and distribution

The soil adsorption coefficient of TCD has been estimated using the OECD 121 HPLC test method and found to be Koc = 10,000. According to the soil mobility potential classification proposed by McCall et al (Proc. of Assoc. of Official Analytical Chemists , 1980), a substance with a Koc value greater than Koc - 5,000 is immobile in soil.

Overall conclusion

The substance does not undergo abiotic degradation or biodegradation, suggesting that it may persist in the environment. A high log Pow and Koc indicates a potential for bioaccumulation, and persistence in soil.
