Description of key information

Two reports based on Koenen test and BAM friction test both contribute in defining the non explosive properties of Calcium Hypophosphite.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

Two reports based on Koenen test and BAM friction test both contribute in defining the non explosive properties of Calcium Hypophosphite.

Even though highly flammable, this substance has never caused explosion accident during the many years of manufacturing, transport and storing. In fact, the substance is imported to Europe but it is manufactured in a plant located in China and belonging to Italmatch and therefore, the manufacturing process is well known by the submitter.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), 2.1.4.2. Screening procedure section, the screening procedure is aimed at identifying the presence of such reactive groups and the potential for rapid energy release. If the screening procedure identifies the substance or mixture to be a potential explosive, the acceptance procedure (section 10.3 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria) has to be performed. Calcium Hypophosphite haven't got chemical groups with explosive properties but it is high flammable so two test were performed to evaluate its explosive potential (Koenen test and BAM friction test).

Both tests are negative so according to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008) the substance can be considered non explosive.
