The aquatic toxicity data of Reaction product of naphthalene, butanol, sulfonated and neutralized by caustic soda have been determined by a read-across approach based on analogue substance Reaction product of naphthalene, propan-2-ol, sulfonated and neutralized by caustic soda.

The aquatic toxicity data of Reaction product of naphthalene, butanol, sulfonated and neutralized by caustic soda are summarized below:

Short-term toxicity to fish:

The test item, Reaction product of naphthalene, butanol, sulfonated and neutralized by caustic soda, was not considered toxic to Zebra Fish at concentrations of up to 100 mg/L.

The 96-hour LC50 of Reaction product of naphthalene, butanol, sulfonated and neutralized by caustic soda toZebra Fish was thus determined to be > 100 mg/L and lower than 220 mg/L , revealing it is not harmful for the fish species tested.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

In a 48–hr-acute toxicity study, daphnids (Daphnia magna) were exposed to Reaction product of naphthalene, propan-2-ol, sulfonated and neutralized by caustic soda at 0.1, 1.0, 10 and 100 mg/L at nominal concentrations (range-finding/limit test) under semi-static conditions according to the OECD guideline N° 202 (2004).

The 48– hour EC50was > 100 mg/L.

The NOEC values, based on mortality/sub-lethal effects, was 100 mg/L.

Based on the results of this study, by analogy (Read accross approach) Reaction product of naphthalene, butanol, sulfonated and neutralized by caustic soda was not harmful to invertebrate.

Toxicity to aquatic algae:

In a 72 hour acute toxicity study, the cultures of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata were exposed to Reaction product of naphthalene, propan-2-ol, sulfonated and neutralized by caustic soda at nominal concentrations of 12.5, 25, 50, 100 and 200 mg/L under static conditions according to the OECD guideline N° 201 (2011).

The following results were determined:

NOEC = 12.5 mg/L

ErC50(0 -72h) >200 mg/L

EyC50(0-72h) > 141.6 mg/L

Based on the results of this study, by analogy (Read across approach), Reaction product of naphthalene, butanol, sulfonated and neutralized by caustic soda was not harmful to algae.

Toxicity to microorganisms:

In a reliable study, the inhibitory effect of Reaction product of naphthalene, propan-2-ol, sulfonated and neutralized by caustic soda on the respiration rate of aerobic wastewater microorganisms of activated sludge was investigated in a 3 -hour respiration inhibition test according to OECD guideline for Testing of Chemicals, n°209 (1984).

The following results were determined:

                                                  NOEC (mg/L): LOEC (mg/L): EC50 (mg/L):

Total Respiration                       0.16                0.51                  >5.2

Heterotrophic Respiration       0.05                0.16                  >5.2

Nitrification Respiration           1.64                5.2                    >5.2

The overall NOAEC determined during this study was 0.05 mg/L, based on heterotrophic respiration. The overall EC50 was determined to be greater than the highest level tested, 5.2 mg/L.

Based on the results of this study, by analogy (Read across approach) Reaction product of naphthalene, butanol, sulfonated and neutralized by caustic soda has effect on the respiration rate of activated sludge microorganisms.
