Description of key information
Additional information
Appearance/physical state/colour
The substance biphenyl-2-ylamine is an organic substance present in the form of beige coloured crystalline powder with characteristic odour.
Melting point/freezing point
The mean melting point range of Biphenyl-2-ylamine (CAS No. 90-41-5) was found to be 45°C – 50.3°C at 977.1 hPa. No decomposition or sublimation was observed at this temperature.
Boiling point
The boiling point of biphenyl-2-ylamine is found to range between 298 -300°C. The value for chemical safety assessment is boiling point of 299oC.
Density
The density of test item biphenyl-2-ylamine (CAS no. 90-41-5) was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to the ASTM D854-00 using glass pyknometer. The density of the test item was found to be 1.159 g/cm3at 21°C and 977.3 hPa.
Particle size distribution (Granulometry)
The particle size distribution of test substance Biphenyl-2-ylamine was determined by Granulometric analysis with Rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was found to be in the range of 106 micron to 150 micron.
Vapour pressure
The vapour pressure of biphenyl-2-ylamine is found to be 0.000117 mmHg at 25°C. This value is equivalent to 0.01559872 Pa.
Partition coefficient
The octanol-water partition coefficient (log pow) of biphenyl-2-ylamine is found to be 2.84
Water solubility
biphenyl-2-ylamine is reported to be insoluble in water in authoritative database GESTIS.
Surface tension
In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, if the water solubility is below 1 mg/L at 20 °C, the test does not need to be conducted. The chemical biphenyl-2-ylamine (Synonym: 2-Biphenylamine) is reported to be insoluble in water (water solubility < 1 mg/L at 20oC). Thus, this end point was considered for waiver.
Flash point
The flash point of biphenyl-2-ylamine is found to be 153°C
Auto flammability
In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, this end point was not considered for testing since the chemical is a solid and the substance has a melting point ≤ 160 °C. The melting point is reported to be 51oC. Thus, the chemical 2-Biphenylamine is not likely to be "Auto Flammable".
Flammability
Flammable solids are solids that are readily combustible, or may cause or contribute to fire through friction. Readily combustible solids are powdered, granular, or pasty substances which are dangerous if they can be easily ignited by brief contact with an ignition source, such as a burning match, and if the flame spreads rapidly. The chemical biphenyl-2-ylamine is not expected to be easily flammable given that it has a high flash point of 153oC.
Explosiveness
There are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule of 2-Biphenylamine and hence in accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, this study was not conducted. Thus, the chemical 2-Biphenylamine is not considered to exhibit explosive properties.
Oxidising properties
The substance biphenyl-2-ylamine is incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials, on the basis of the chemical structure since it is an organic substance not containing oxygen or halogen atoms. Thus, testing for oxidising properties was considered to be scientifically unjustified in accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation. Thus, the chemical biphenyl-2-ylamine is not expected to exhibit oxidising properties.
