Description of key information

An acidic/alkaline reserve test indicated that PBN1 mixture cannot be automatically considered as potentially corrosive to skin but can be considered as severely irritant to the eye. However, the substance contains chromium fluoride which is self-classified as corrosive (R34). As it is present at 11.5% in the mixture, PBN1 mixture should be classified as corrosive (R34) taking into account the classification criteria of Directive 1999/45/EC and corrosive cat. 1B (H314) and eye damage cat. 1 (H318) taking into account the classification criteria of Directive 1272/2008/EC (CLP). Thus, skin or eye irritation testing has been waived based on the available information indicating that the criteria for classification as corrosive for the skin are met.

Additional information

An acidic/alkaline reserve test was performed and results indicated that the product cannot be automatically considered as potentially corrosive to the skin while 2/3 criteria fulfilled to consider the substance as severely irritant to the eye.

Although the first step of a stepwise strategy for assessing cutaneous irritation was negative, the presence of 11.5% chromium fluoride self-classified as corrosive implies to classify PBN1 mixture as corrosive C (R34) taking into account the classification criteria of Directive 1999/45/EC or corrosive cat. 1B (H314) taking into account the classification criteria of Directive 1272/2008/EC (CLP).

According to the acidic/alkaline reserve test results and the classification rules of Directive 1272/2008/EC (CLP), a classification eye damage cat. 1 (H318) would be applied.

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: corrosive

Effects on eye irritation: corrosive

Justification for classification or non-classification

Chromium fluoride (CAS No.: 7788-97-8) has been self-classified C (R34). As chromium fluoride is present at 11.5% in the mixture, PBN1 mixture should be classified as corrosive (R34) taking into account the classification criteria of Directive 1999/45/EC and corrosive cat. 1B (H314) and eye damage cat. 1 (H318) into account the classification criteria of Directive 1272/2008/EC (CLP).
