In contact with water titanium acid esters react in the following way (Hollemann & Wiberg, 1995):

Ti(OR)4 + 2H2O  TiO2 + 4 HOR

Therefore, titanium(4+) 2-(dimethylamino)ethanolate will dissociate rapidly and titanium dioxide (CAS 13463-67-7) and 2-dimethylaminoethanol (CAS 108-01-0) are formed under environmental conditions. Consequently, the hazard assessment is based on study results performed with these dissociation products.

In algae studies ErC50 values of 66 mg/L for 2 -dimethylaminoethanol (BASF 1989, 2008) and clearly above water solubility for titanium dioxide (Du Pont 2006) were determined as most sensitive parameters and used for classification and labeling.
