Tantalum carbide is an inorganic gold-brown powder. The melting point of tantalum carbide is 3880 °C, and its boiling point is 4780 °C at 101325 hPa. The density of tantalum carbide at room temperature is 14.3 g/cm³.The median value of particle size of tantalum carbide was determined to be 1.27 µm. The water solubility is very low (0.333 µg/L after 7 days, 21.5 °C, loading 100 mg/L)

The substance is non-explosive and non-flammable and does not have oxidising properties. The self-ignition temperature of tantalum carbide is 381 °C.
