Description of key information

MEXORYL SCK is considered to have no oxidizing properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
no

Additional information

One GLP study was performed in order to determine the oxidising properties of MEXORYL SCK (also called MEXORYL SBT) in compliance with the EU method A.17.

During the preliminary test the MEXORYL SCK/cellulose mixture burned for a few seconds. Under the ignition source, the surface of the test item foamed, glowed and colored black. Underneath the carbonized surface, some unaltered residue remained. The barium nitrate/cellulose mixture during the same test burned for 72 sec with a sizzling flame.

In order to confirm the results from the preliminary test, a main test was performed. The burning rates for various test item/cellulose powder mixtures were determined and compared to a reference mixture. The MEXORYL SCK/cellulose mixture containing 10% of the test item showed a burning rate of 0.055 mm/s. All other prepared mixtures showed no burning or only surface burning.

Therefore, MEXORYL SCK has no oxidizing properties.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the results of the GLP Harlan Laboratories study n°C71971, MEXORYL SCK has no oxidizing properties.
