Accuracy checking


The accuracy of the instrument was checked by determining the melting point of a certified sample of benzoic acid (certified melting point: 122.4°C ± 0.3°C). The results were:


First determination: 122.6°C


Second determination: 122.5°C

First determination: observed boiling point: 258.7°C


Second determination: observed boiling point: 258.3°C


 


Correction to normalized pressure


The atmospheric pressure at the time of the experiment was 96.79 kPa (Meteo Suisse). A correction of the temperature to normalised pressure (101.325 kPa) was made. The determination of this correction factor was made using the Sidney Young equation, as recommended in OECD guideline 103.

p = pressure in kPa; the pressure was obtained from the Swiss meteorological service for the time of the experiment;


fT= rate of change of boiling temperature with pressure in K/kPa, here a value of 0.45 K/kPa, as published in the OECD guideline 103, was used.

With this correction made, it can be concluded that the standard boiling point of test item is (values rounded off): 534K (260°C).

Executive summary:

The boiling point of test item was measured according to OECD Guideline No. 103, with the Siwoloboff capillary method, and under GLP.


After preliminary testing, two main determinations were performed, at a heating rate of 0.5°C/minute. Results were within precision. The atmospheric pressure at the time of the experiment was 96.79 kPa. A correction of the temperature to normalised pressure (101.325 kPa) was made with the Sidney-Young equation.


The normal boiling point of test item is 260°C (534K).
