First-aid measures

General information:

Take persons to a safe place. Observe self-protection for first aid. Always seek medical advice in the event of contact with this substance.

After contact with the eyes:

Rinse immediately with plenty of water for 10-15 minutes. Keep eyelids well open to rinse the whole eye surface and eyelids with water. Seek medical advice immediately and clearly identify substance. Continue to bathe eyes during transport to medical practitioner.

After contact with the skin:

Remove contaminated clothes at once. Wash off with plenty of water or water and soap immediately for 10-15 minutes. In serious cases, use emergency shower immediately. Seek medical advice immediately and clearly identify substance.

After inhalation:

Keep the patient calm. If unconscious place in stable sideways position. Protect against loss of body heat. If breathing stops, administer artificial respiration. Seek medical advice immediately and clearly identify substance.

After swallowing:

If conscious, give several small portions of water to drink. Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical advice immediately and clearly identify substance.

Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

After inhalation: treat as early as possible using cortisone spray. Medical checks necessary up to a latency period of at least 24 hours. In the event of 1st degree burns use corticoid-externa. In the case of 2nd degree burns, use symptomatic treatment.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media

Suitable extinguishing media:

Use water spray (not stream) to fight fires, extinguishing powder, alcohol-resistant foam. For small amounts: carbon dioxide.

Extinguishing media which must not be used for safety reasons:

none known.

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

Hazardous combustion products: hydrogen chloride.

Advice for firefighters

Special protective equipment for fire fighting:

Use respiratory protection independent of recirculated air.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Wear personal protection equipment. Task force: Use tightly fitting chemical protection suit. Keep unprotected persons away. Take persons to a safe place. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Avoid inhaling mists and vapours. Observe wind direction.

Environmental precautions

Prevent material from entering sewers or surface waters. Contain any fluid that runs out using suitable material (e.g. earth). Dispose of in prescribed marked containers.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Do not flush away with water. Absorb with a liquid binding material such as diatomaceous earth and dispose of according to local/state/federal regulations. For small amounts: Cover with calcium oxide. Contain larger amounts and pump up into suitable containers.

Further information:

Eliminate all sources of ignition.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling

General information:

Avoid exposure by technical measures or personal protective equipment.

Precautions for safe handling:

Ensure adequate ventilation. Must be syphoned off in situ.

Precautions against fire and explosion:

Cool endangered containers with water. Flammable vapors may accumulate and form explosive mixtures with air in containers, process vessels, including partial, empty and uncleaned containers and vessels, or other enclosed spaces. Keep away from sources of ignition and do not smoke. Take precautionary measures against electrostatic charging.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Conditions for storage rooms and vessels:

Unsuitable material for storage containers, casks and pipelines: light metals and their alloys, iron, steel, zinc. Store under protective gas. Test the suitability of materials for storage vessels, containers and piping.

Advice for storage of incompatible materials:

Observe local/state/federal regulations.

Further information for storage:

Store in the original container. Keep container dry and tightly closed. Store cool.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Control parameters

Maximum airborne concentrations at the workplace:

CAS No.              Material                                      Type               mg/m3    ppm

                Aerosol - respirable fraction                                        10,0

75-09-2      Dichloromethane                             AGW                350,0      100,0

Exposure in the work place limited and controlled

General protection and hygiene measures:

Avoid exposure. Remove contaminated, soaked clothing immediately. Provide emergency shower and eye-bath.

Personal protection equipment:

Respiratory protection

In open handling, use respiratory protective equipment. Respirator with a full face mask, according to acknowledged standards such as EN 136.

Recommended Filter type: Combined filter type ABEK-P2 (certain inorganic, organic and acidic gases and vapors; ammonia/amines; particles), according to acknowledged standards such as EN 14387.

Observe the equipment manufacturer's information and wear time limits for respirators.

In case of long or strong exposure: positive pressure self contained breathing apparatus

Eye protection

tight fitting protective goggles .

Hand protection

Recommended glove types: Protective gloves made of butyl rubber

thickness of the material: 0,5 mm

Gloves are required at all times when handling the material. Because of the product properties, gloves are generally only suitable for protection against splashes. Due to the substance‘s properties, contaminated gloves must be immediately decontaminated and changed. Gloves should be discarded and replaced if there is any indication of degradation or chemical breakthrough.

Skin protection

full protective suit.

Exposure to the environment limited and controlled

Prevent material from entering surface waters, drains or sewers and soil.

Further information for system design and engineering measures

Use only in closed systems.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity; Chemical stability; Possibility of hazardous reactions

If stored and handled in accordance with standard industrial practices no hazardous reactions are known.

Conditions to avoid

Keep away from incompatible substances.

Incompatible materials

Reacts violently with basic substances. Reaction causes the formation of heat.

Hazardous decomposition products

none known.

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment methods

Material

Recommendation:

Dispose of according to regulations by incineration in a special waste incinerator. Observe local/state/federal regulations.

Uncleaned packaging

Recommendation:

Completely discharge containers (no tear drops, no powder rest, scraped carefully). Containers may be recycled or re-used. Observe local/state/federal regulations.
